Most types of cat food consist of leftovers from meat production for humans. However, since humans do not breed mice as food, mice would have to be bred and slaughtered specifically for cat food. The rodents are also very small and do not produce much meat. Therefore, from an economic point of view, mice in cat food are not worth it: the food would be very complex to produce β and therefore significantly more expensive for the cat owner than other flavors.
Depending on its hunting skills, a wild cat catches between eight and twelve mice per day. However, it would only need about 6-7 to be full.
A good cat food contains one thing above all: meat! Cats are carnivores and therefore depend on a high protein intake through their diet. It is also important to feed them either fresh/raw food or use a high-quality can.
In nature, cats eat various small meals every day. These consist primarily of hunted mice, birds, fish and insects. The prey is eaten whole, including innards, stomach contents, bones and fur. This provides the cat with everything it needs to live: proteins, fats, carbohydrates, fiber and fluids.
How much food a cat needs per day depends on various factors. In addition to age and weight, activity also plays a major role. An outdoor cat has a much higher energy consumption than an indoor cat that just goes back and forth between the sofa and the food bowl. As a guideline: an adult cat of average size and weighing around 4 kilograms eats 210 to 300 grams of wet food per day.
