Welpen sollten mehrmals am Tag kleine Portionen bekommen. Bei erwachsenen Hunden ist auch eine einmalige Fütterung am Tag möglich. Ist der Hund trächtig oder laktierend, sollte eine die Fütterung 2 oder 3 Mal täglich erfolgen.

Es ist durchaus möglich Nass- und Trockenfutter auf die verschiedenen Mahlzeiten aufzuteilen. Viele Hundebesitzer bevorzugen diese Kombination, da sie eine Abwechslung in der Ernährung des Hundes bietet.

Überprüfen Sie regelmäßig das Gewicht Ihres Hundes. Die Rippen sollten leicht zu fühlen, aber nicht sichtbar sein. Ausserdem sollte eine leichte Taille vorhanden sein.

Es gibt verschiedene Ansichten darüber, ob man Hunden immer das gleiche Futter füttern sollte, oder ob die Ernährung abwechslungsreicher gestaltet werden sollte. Wenn das Futter umgestellt wird, sollte das langsam erfolgen.

Man kann nicht pauschal sagen, welche Ernährungsform besser ist. Trocken- und Nassfutter können auch kombiniert werden. Dann sollten die Futterarten allerdings nicht zeitgleich gefüttert werden, da sie unterschiedlich verdaut werden.
